In the mid-1970s, vexillologists disagreed as to whether the flag that allegedly flew at the Battle of Bunker Hill, (17 June 1775) had a field of red or blue. Emmet V. Mittlebeeler, together with Dororthy Claybourne, researched the flag’s history and their findings were first printed in The Flag Bulletin vol. 17, no. 2 (March-April 1978) and later provided as an offprint. The authors concluded that the scant contemporary historical evidence, rather than resolving the question of the field’s color, “leads us to the belief that no flag at all was used by the American forces as a whole.” The offprint is available as an open-access download below. Mittlebeeler was a professor of government and public administration at American University, and was the second recipient of the Captain William Driver Award of the North American Vexillological Association-Association nord-américaine de vexillologie. Claybourne was a librarian at Saint Louis University, Saint Louis, Mo.
