As the mid-1970s saw the United States observe its 200th anniversary of independence, Revolutionary War flags were of great public interest. The Flag Research Center reprinted the American flags portion of Gherardi Davis’s “Regimental Colors in the War of the Revolution” in The Flag Bulletin vol. 16, no. 1 (Jan.-Feb. 1977) and later provided as an offprint. Davis was one of the most significant flag scholars of the 20th century–so much so, Dr. Whitney Smith, that “[i]t is a tribute to his skill that Gherardi Davis is still well worth reading seventy years after his first work appeared in print.” The offprint is available as an open-access download below.
